#Interview: Andrea Rinaldi, kickboxing champion

The pandemic drastically changed our habits. Everyone of us had to give up on important moments of our life: a happy hour, a dinner with friends, cinema or, most importantly, a moment to take care of our body.
Sport is as important as taking care of our mental health. Spending one hour at the gym to learn a new discipline is a valid way to let out some of our negative energy and calibrate our emotions. Some people do sports on a daily basis with their other passions. Sometimes, this leads to an agonistic career.

We have gotten the possibility to interview Andrea Rinaldi, an Italian kickboxing champion and trainer. We are hoping that his words can help some people to understand this discipline and to get close to it because it can help to overcome some personal limits due to this horrible period.
A true professional skill is to know how to adapt to every circumstance.

Q: How did you discover kickboxing?

A: I’ve always practiced sports since I was a child. I did martial arts and I bought my gear in Agostino Moroni’s shop, the one who became my teacher. He always talked about kickboxing, so I decided to try it. It was love at first sight and I never stopped.

Q: What’s the reason why you decided to dedicate your whole life to this sport?

A: Moroni made it easy for me to combine my two favorite subjects: sports and science. I was convinced I had to sacrifice one of them for the other, but now I can live for what I love.

Q: We imagine that training your body is fundamental, but in the world of martial arts we know that mental training is equally important. What are your ways to maintain the attention?

A: First of all, I’d like to say that mental training is really fundamental. Everything comes from our mind, not from others. We have to find out goals, create them, make them real. And we have to be patient. To achieve 100 points, you have to start from 0. Once you have your goals clear, we have to concentrate on them. Then we can create a mind mapping of the plan you have to follow in order to achieve those goals. We can’t forget to be enthusiastic. The word “enthusiasm” is marvelous: it means “having God inside” in ancient Greek. That’s it, we have to have God inside. Always.

Q: Do this technique works even in your private life? Does it help you to solve your personal problems?

A: Of course! I saw that it worked for sports and I was like “why can’t it work in life?”. So I use it for every problem I have. It is so important that it works better in everyday life.

Q: How do you see kids nowadays? Does this pandemic bring them closer to this sports or not?

A: Unfortunately, this pandemic didn’t bring them closer to sports. It created some bad habits, such as more hours spent on social media. The majority of the kids couldn’t adapt to this situation, they have been left alone. They have now a very few enthusiasm for life then they had before and they can’t find something worthy enough to get out of the dark.

Q: Do gyms can reopen with the needed precautions or are they really a vehicle of contagion?

A: Gyms can and must be reopened using all the precautions. Only agonists can now train in gyms right now. And it’s enough to demonstrate that with the right safety measures no one risks anything. People go to gyms to be healthy and it’s risky to stop this habit. Of course we have to do it with the right mentality, but it’s really important.

Q: You obviously feel the great pain kids feel as you work with them. Do you want to leave a message for them?

A: Yes. I want to tell them not to give up, to take this period to cultivate new passions to be better people. As I found science in sports, I can assure you all that you can find every passion you can think of in it. Remember to always look ahead of you, beyond the borders. Every problem hides a solution in itself.

We talk about a lot of other arguments with Andrea Rinaldi, from Einstein’s physics to ancient and modern philosophy. We tried to reassume everything in this one article focused on the most important topic: gym reopening.
We are always ready to talk about other topics because we all want a more unified world and we all want our kids not to be left behind. They are our future and we are betting our present for it to be the best one.
We thank Andrea Rinaldi from the bottom of our hearts for his time spent with us.
